Have you ever seen a mirage? In spring, the Sea of Okhotsk offers the rare chance to witness a natural phenomenon called a superior mirage. It occurs when warm air layers over cold air, bending light and creating extraordinary visual illusions. Around this time of year, you might see unusual sights—like the snow-covered Shiretoko Peninsula appearing upside down or stretched out—offering a completely different view than usual. On this special cruise, you’ll board the Garinko III and head offshore from Monbetsu in search of mirages. A curator from the Okhotsk Drift Ice Science Center will provide fascinating explanations and conduct live mirage experiments. We recommend bringing your own binoculars for the best viewing experience. (Binoculars with a magnification of 7x to 10x are ideal.)
